Starting therapy is a meaningful step, and we’re honored to be part of your journey. At reNEW YOU Counseling & Wellness, we strive to make your first appointment feel welcoming, supportive, and comfortable from the moment you walk through our doors.
Your first session — often called an intake appointment — is an opportunity for you and your therapist to get to know one another, discuss your goals, review important information, and begin building a strong therapeutic connection.
Before Your Appointment
Once your appointment is scheduled, you will receive an email from SimplePractice with intake paperwork that must be completed prior to your first session.
Please also:
- Download the SimplePractice app
- Complete all forms before your appointment
- Reach out to our Office Administrator, Valerie Treat, with any questions or technical difficulties
Virtual Appointments
If your appointment is virtual, you will receive a secure session link by email and/or text before your appointment time. If you do not receive your link, please contact our office for assistance.
In-Person Appointments
If you are attending in person, there is no need to bring paperwork with you, as all forms are completed electronically beforehand.
For Children Under 14
We view parents and guardians as important partners in a child’s care and wellness journey.
During the first appointment:
- The therapist will typically begin by meeting with both the child and parent(s)/guardian(s)
- Office policies, privacy practices, and intake information will be reviewed
- Parents will have an opportunity to share concerns, history, and goals for treatment
- Depending on the child’s comfort level, the therapist may spend part of the session individually with the child to begin building trust and rapport
If parents prefer to meet separately with the therapist, we are happy to discuss accommodations whenever possible.
For Teens Ages 14–17
As teens develop greater independence, we aim to create a supportive space that encourages autonomy while still involving parents appropriately.
At the intake appointment:
- Therapists will greet both teens and parents in the waiting area
- Parents may briefly join the beginning of the session if the teen is comfortable
- Most of the session is typically spent one-on-one with the teen to foster trust and open communication
We also review confidentiality, privacy laws, and important safety exceptions during the intake process.
In Pennsylvania, teens age 14 and older may consent to their own mental health treatment.
Support for Separated or Divorced Families
We understand that every family dynamic is unique and strive to create a neutral, supportive environment for all caregivers involved.
When parents are separated or divorced:
- Parents may meet with the therapist individually if preferred
- Both parents are encouraged to share relevant information and ask questions
- Custody documentation may be requested to confirm consent for treatment and decision-making rights
Our Goal
Whether you are seeking support for yourself, your child, or your family, our goal is to provide a space where you feel seen, heard, supported, and ready to reNEW.
We look forward to partnering with you on your path toward healing and wellness.
