LGBTQ, Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation
At reNEW YOU Counseling and Wellness we provide gender affirming, person centered therapy. Although a person’s sexual or romantic orientation or their gender identity may not be a source of distress, people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual or any other orientation or gender may find that the social stigma of living as a minority is a source of stress or anxiety. That being said, it is often helpful to work with a professional counselor in a safe space to address these difficulties.
What does LGBTQIA stand for?
The acronym LGBTQIA represents those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning, intersex, and asexual.
What issues might LGBTQIA youth face?
Despite rapidly growing cultural acceptance of diverse sexual and romantic orientations and gender identifications, oppression, discrimination, and marginalization of LGBTQ people persists. This can lead to issues such as depression, anxiety, social anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, dissociative disorders, etc. Youth who identify as LGBTQ are at an increased risk for suicidal ideation and self harm.
